Alghero is a picturesque town nestled on the west coast of the Italian island of Sardinia. Alghero has a long history of seafaring inhabitants, most notably the Phoenicians, the Genoese, the Aragonese, the Catalans, and the Hapsburgs, until it finally came under control of the northern Italian region of Piedemont. As a result of its frequent occupations Alghero has Catalan, Spanish and Italian influences and all three languages can be heard on the streets. The architecture too is reflective of these influences, with the Cathedral of Saint Mary, Neptune's Grotto, the Palazzo D'Albis and the Church of Saint Francis all well worth a visit. Many of the main tourist locations on Sardinia are within easy driving distance of Alghero, including the UNESCO World Heritage listed Su Naxari di Barumini Nuraghe archaeological site.

Alghero is serviced by the nearby Fertilia Airport (sometimes referred to as Alghero Airport), located approximately five kilometres north west of the city. The airport sees over a million passengers a year, a sign of the rapidly growing popularity of the area amongst holidaymakers. Ryan Air is the main airline to use the airport, flying routes to many German airports as well as to Liverpool, London-Stansted and the East Midlands. There are several car-hire companies based at the airport (located at desks opposite the arrival gate), including Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Thrifty, Maggiore, Sardinya and more. To get into Alghero from the airport head towards the SP42 and take it south. It will connect with Via. Don Minzoni in the outskirts of the town and this road will lead you towards the centre.
